Junior Specialist (Bruno Lab, UCSF)

The Department of Urology is now recruiting a full-time Junior Specialist in the Bruno lab . The Bruno lab is interested in applying synthetic biologic and functional genomics to understand antigen presentation and T-cell recognition in cancer, autoimmunity, and infectious diseases.
The applicant will work on specific projects and has a unique opportunity to work with a dynamic group of scientists, with the possibility of publishing in a high-impact journal. The position duties include performing molecular biology techniques such as DNA extraction, PCR, plasmid preparation, basic cloning, flow cytometry, NGS library prep and analysis, gel electrophoresis, tissue culture, scientific writing, organization of data appropriate to the role in the lab, record keeping and data entry, and shared lab responsibilities including reagent preparation, inventory maintenance, and safety compliance. Importantly, they would be expected to master screening for MHC-I peptides via EpiScan: go.nature.com/3GzQsaD.

Required Qualifications:

  • Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a bachelor's degree (or equivalent degree) in a relevant area of study, such as biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, biology, or a related field, from an accredited US college or university.
  • Previous (or in process) coursework in molecular biology, genetics, immunology, or biochemistry is mandatory
  • Applicant must have (or in process of obtaining) experience working with at least two of the following techniques: mammalian cell culture, molecular cloning, flow cytometry, virus production, or next-generation sequencing and analysis
  • Previous independent laboratory experience outside of required courses is mandatory.
  • Applicant must be an effective communicator, detail-oriented and organized, able to take the initiative to address research issues, have strong analytical skills, work independently, and collaborate effectively with others.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
  • Must be able to keep a complete and detailed laboratory notebook of experimental procedures and data and to archive, label, and document graphic and tabular data for publication, proposals, and/or presentations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in most, if not all, of the following molecular biology techniques, tissue culture, flow cytometry, electrophoresis, DNA manipulation techniques, molecular cloning, flow cytometry, virus production, or next-generation sequencing and analysis, and transfection.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a minimum overall undergraduate GPA of >3.4.
  • At least a 2-year commitment.
